Chikku Bukku romantic-action film directed by Manikandan and is produced by Metro films. It stars Arya, Shriya Saran and Preetika in the lead roles. Santhanam and Vaiyapuri are also part of the film. The film opens with a backdrop of 1985 where Sekar (Arya) is penning his memories in a diary. Immediately the film is fast-forwarded to 2010. The location is London and we come across Arjun (again played by Arya), a successful DJ. Then there is Anu (Shriya Charan) brought up in the foreign country, but values the Tamil culture very well. They are on their way to Tamil Nadu their own reasons and situations urge them to travel together. On the way, Arjun glimpses through the diary of his father Sekar and the love stories of different generation are shown simultaneously with an unexpected but a happy climax.

For the first time Arya is seen in a dual avatar on screen, however the actor succeeds in both the role. Arya’s has portrayed the role of ‘simple’ Shekar and ‘stylish’ Arjun with equal importance. Arya dialogue delivery has a unique style and there is no denying the fact that he is one of the most promising actors in Kollywood today. However Chikku Bukku cannot be considered as his best because we have already seen his potential.

Sluggish screenplay turns out to be one of the blatant minuses of this film. What should have been a gripping tale of romance loses its pace halfway. The conflicts aren’t established properly. The main drawback of the film is the narrative imbalance. The flashback sequences are narrated through the lead characters’ glimpses on diary. But the lack of continuity during second hour trivializes the intensity.

Cast: Jai, Shazahn Padamsee, Vijay Vasanth
Director: Sripathy Rangaswamy
Music: Satish Chakravarthy
Cinematography: P. Chidamparam
Producers: T. Siva,Sona Heiden
Release Date: 26 November 2010

It is a simple romantic moive starring Jai and the beautiful Shahzahn Padamsee in the lead roles.

The story is about Jai, who is playing the role of a guy called Rajesh who loves Shahzahn madly.  He is unaware of the girl’s name till the end.  Rajesh takes it for granted that the girl too loves him the way he does.  Actors have given complete justice to their respective roles. Shahzahn, who is playing a character of a simple girl had another movie that also released today, ‘Orange’ that stars the Genelia D’Souza and Chiranjeevi’s son Teja. She feels that both of her films have great potential to be big hits at the box office. If the plot of Kanimozhi interests you, it's time you go and watch it in the theatre. At one point you tend to feel the overdose of emotions but the actors have managed the stuff quite well.

Even in this extremely poor storyline, Jai puts up an average performance as Rajesh. But lead actress Shahzahn Padamsee is an utter disappointment. She manages to look good but puts on only a single expression throughout the movie. The only good part of ‘Kanimozhi’ is its running time. With less than two hours of screen time, it means less torture for viewers of the Tamil flick.

Director Sripathy has tried his best to move away from regular cinema in his maiden venture itself. And succeeds in his attempt to a certain extent. Good in parts, ‘Kanimozhi’ may not fulfill your expectations. But at the same time, it is not a total disappointment.

Director: Mithran R Jawahar
Producer: Mohan Apparao
Music Director: Vijay Antony
Cast: Dhanush, Genelia Dsouza, Bhagyaraj

The film revolves around Siva (Dhanush), an engineering college student, who belongs to a very rich family. On a turn of events, when he helps his cousin girl get married with her boyfriend on the day of marriage, he is chased out of house. Dhanush happens to kidnap Genelia from her marriage after he mistakes for another woman.  Incidentally even Genelia is trying to escape from the marriage since she is being forcebly married off to her cousin by her uncle so that he can get hold on her property.  Now Dhanush takes her to his house and she gets close to him and they fall in love.  But before the interval, Genelia is kidnapped by his uncle.  The rest of the story in on how Dhanush can manage to save Genelia from her two uncles.

Finding faults with Uthamaputhiran will be difficult. One feels that with the given plot, premise and resources, Mithran Jawahar has delivered the best possible results. Yes, there is a feeling that 3 hours is a tad too long; that the climax is a bit sugar coated, that certain portions could have been avoided (like the Spiderman bit) and such minor things. But, the final product stands above all these glitches.

As on whole, ‘Uthama Puthiran’ proves to be an excellent entertainer for this season and we recommend this film strongly for the family audiences.

 Movie : Endhiran
Cast : Rajini, Aiswaryarai
Music : A.R.Rahman
Director : Shankar

The wait is finally over and Endhiran is here after a good three years almost. But upon watching the film the feeling you come out with is clear. The film is well worth the wait indeed!

Made at a budget of around Rs 160 crore, the movie is a VFX fest of a scale and grandeur hitherto unseen in Indian cinema. With the use of the animatronics technology (done by Stan Winston Studio) director Shankar brings his innovative imagination to life on the screen. The last half hour of the film particularly pushes the envelope and creates a spectacle of jaw dropping grandeur, packing in all the paisa vasool entertainment that any ardent Rajini fan asks for. Even if you don’t swear by the mega star’s demi-god status, you’ll still be sitting on the edge of your seat.

Endhiran does have its flaws, which is a bit disappointing. The first half is a smooth and jolly ride as the cute Chitty takes centre stage. A couple of fights set the tone for the fans to go overboard with excitement, a few lighter moment most of which are enjoyable and two songs make it a relatively light hearted affair. Shankar’s ability to write commercial Tamil cinema elements (hero rescuing damsel in distress, witty one liners etc.) into a sci-fi script is commendable. That stops Endhiran from being a pure sci-fi flick, making it apt for all class audiences. Beginning of the second half is however not an apt extrapolation of the expectations raised in the first half. Though too much does not go wrong, there are portions which one feels could have been tighter. Some sequences, especially the ‘Ranguski’ part, are dragged along for more than a reasonable length. A couple of songs follow each other in quick succession which dampens things a bit. But, if you are willing to be patient through these minor glitches, the rest of the second half is racy, action packed and intelligent.

Rajini turns into an insane caricature in his evil avatar, but the rest of the flick sees him pull off rather sedate stuff, with even his swagger being simulated by the machines. Rai has stunning screen presence despite her silly role and exaggerated heroine-histrionics.

Rahman's music is an important accompaniment to the film, given Shankar's fixation with high-end songs. The tracks are all pretty good, but the much-hyped Machu Pichu song comes in at a point where the movie is grating your nerves.

In the end, the kind of hype and money that floated around this flick could probably not have been matched by its IQ anyway, and maybe that was the problem.

Cast: Mammotty,Sneha, Arjun, Kalabhavan, VMC Haneefa, Sumitra, Riaz Khan
Production: Pankaj Productions
Music: Vidyasagar

On the face of it, Henry's Vande Mataram, a bilingual film directed by Aravind T (of Oomai Vizhigal fame), has a many things going for it -- a strong star cast, neat cinematography, a great SFX team and a plot that tries to veer away from the standard patriotic formula. Yet, there are plenty of stumbling blocks that destroy the momentum and take the spice from the story.

Vande Mataram is based on the story of a group of officers who go hunting for terrorists, who have been creating havoc in the Tamilnadu - Kerala border. Mammootty plays an officer in the Intelligence Bureau while Arjun plays a Superintendent of Police.

The film begins at the central investigative agency finds out that Malik, head of a terrorist organization, has crossed the border and entered India to execute deadly explosions in South India. Gopi Krishnan played by Mammootty, Southern zone command director of the Intelligence bureau, is assigned the task of tracing the plans of the group, eliminating them and destroying their plans.

The first half has raciness due to various plots involved, but during the second half the pace drops down invariably. It’s all because the drama completely involves one-to-one investigation on terrorists.

D. Imman’s music is good and the re-recording is inspiring at times. The director has chosen an apt title for the movie, after a long time, as we get really emotional and patriotic watching the movie. Vandae Maatharam is a good movie which could have been better if it had been fine-tuned a little.

Cast: Srikanth, Vishnu, Poonam Bajwa, Poorna, Pooja
Direction: Sudha
Production: Mano Akkineni
Music: Selvaganesh

Sudha K Prasad might have come from Mani Ratnam’s school of filmmaking, having apprenticed under him in many of his successful movies. But nothing in Drohi suggests a semblance of her dependency of Mani’s filmmaking bible – like the subtlety or the layered themes his movies have. Of course, her Mani connections are not yardsticks to measure her talent as a standalone director but the lessons she learnt there ought to have helped her in her directorial debut.

The story starts off on a gripping note within fraction of minutes followed by a flashback on sluggish notes and pace back in momentum during penultimate sequence.

It all begins with childhood friends Saamy, a handsome Brahmin boy and Gangling chap Karuna studying together in primary level of school at North Chennai. There arrives a cute looking teacher Roja (Pooja), who is ruthlessly murdered by goons. Gotta compare it with Fernando Meirelles’ ‘City of God’ that involves young kids involved in crimes and so are Karuna and Saamy…

The story gathers momentum when Narayanan takes advantage of this feud when his only son is killed under unforeseen circumstances. Violence and gore marks the story. And a blindfolded Karuna tied to the railway tracks keeps you guessing his fate till the end. There are several loose ends and quick jumps in the story. While the audience is offered a glimpse into Karuna's background, very little is known of Samy or his relationship with his parents until we see him as an adult visiting the temple where his father is a priest.

Poorna and Poonam Bajwa set the screen on fire. Pooja deserves a special mention. Thyagarajan is also there. Stunts by Dilip Subbarayan are the highlight of the movie. Due credit should be given to music director Selvaganesh as couple of his songs are hummable. At times, the second half is too predictable. The length is also an eye-sore in the latter part. But these things may not stop you from enjoying ‘Drohi’.

Production: K. Srinivasan, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Aarya
Direction: Rajesh
Star-casts: Aarya, Nayanthara, Santhanam, .Naan Kadavul. Rajendran, Chitra Lakshmanan, Subbu Panchu and others
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Set in the backdrop of Kumbakonam, Boss Engira Bhaskaran has Arya playing the role of a happy-go-lucky guy Bhaskaran aka Boss, with a good-for-nothing image in his social circle; Santhanam plays his only friend Nalla Thambi who runs a saloon. Nayantara plays a trainee lecturer Chandrika. Malayalam actress Shakeela, noted for her appearances in numerous soft porn movies, plays a cameo as a tutorial teacher, while Jiiva comes in the climax in a special role.

The hilarious portions of Santhanam is the major plus while Aarya and Nayanthara are justediocre.Set in backdrops of Kumbakonam, Baskaran aka Boss (Aarya) leads a devil-may-care life. More arrears, jobless and such factors make his days grow unintentional. He falls in love with Chandrika (Nayanthara), a well educated post-graduate, whose elder sister (Vijayalakshmi) marries Boss’ elder brother (Subbu Panchu). Nalla Thambi (Santhanam) is often wretched with the friendship of Boss and yet stands by his side in times of distress.

When Baskaran professes his love for Chandrika through her elder sister, oppositions takes in place on front place as his family members complain of his idleness and irresponsiblenesses. Rajnikanth’s challenge in Annamalai becomes Boss’ intentions as he challenges of making it bigger in life. Rest of the story is about the comical encounters of Baskaran and Nalla Thambi as they commence a tutorial school.

Director M Rajesh is clever and looks like he has gauged the pulse of the audience to a certain level correctly. The viewers are treated to a laugh-riot no doubt but if one needs to enjoy the movie then the best thing to do is to watch the film without any expectations whatsoever.

Yuvan Shankar Raja disappoints with the background score. Except ‘Yaar Indha Penn’, nothing sustains into your senses. He keeps repeating the same percussions in background through second half. Sakthi’s Saravanan camera work is a manifestation of great visuals. Vivek Harshan’s editing is okay.

The film is worth a watch with the family and sure to keep the viewer in good cheer throughout.

Siddarth’s treatment of script is quite enjoyable as he brings the film with right mix of action and comedy.
The story of Bale Pandiya goes this way…

Pandian is a young man, looking for something positive to occur in his life. After failing in every attempt to find a job and make a life for himself, he gets branded as a complete loser and a jinx. Unsuccessful in getting a job, failed in love and heavily in debt – he decides to end his life. After several unsuccessful attempts – a completely depressed Pandian takes the help of AKP; a notorious contract killer to do the job. AKP agrees. He then embarks on a journey that changes his life and leads him to his ultimate destiny. Borrowing its theme from the yesteryear classic of the same name, this movie differs in its treatment, and is not to be confused with the old Bale Pandiya.

In terms of acting Vishnu, Amar and Pia Bajpai have done a wonderful role with their varied expressions. Pia Bajpai provides the required oomph to a certain level. The greatest speed breaker in the movie is the comedy track of Vivek who comes in the role of a UK settled guy. Vivek has totally lost his charm and the entire movie would have been a lot better without this boring comedy track. The movie has a running time of 140 minutes.

In short, if Siddharth had tweaked a few portions in the film, we would have said- Bale Siddharth!. Go without expectations and enjoy the ride!
